Earliest incorporation as a town was effective: April 2, 1866
First election: March 2, 1868
Earliest incorporation as a town, in Santa Barbara County at that time, was approved March 10, 1866, effective April 2, 1866 (1865 California Laws, Chapter 217, pp. 216-219). The first town officials were appointed by this law and served until the first election was held on March 2, 1868 (ibid).
The town was surveyed November 22, 1865 (ibid).
