Earliest incorporation as the village of Rochesterville: Mar. 21, 1817
Name changed to Rochester: May 1, 1822
Incorporation as the village of Rochester: May 1, 1826
Incorporation as a city: June 2, 1834
Earliest incorporation as the village of Rochesterville, in Genesee County at that time, was passed March 21, 1817 (1817 New York Laws, Chapter 96, pp. 84-90).
The name was changed to Rochester in an act passed April 12, 1822, effective May 1, 1822 (1822 New York Laws, Chapter 192, pp. 192-193).
Incorporation as the village of Rochester was passed April 10, 1826, effective May 1, 1826 (1826 New York Laws, Chapter 140, pp. 112-128).
Incorporation as a city was passed April 28, 1834, effective June 2, 1834 (1834 New York Laws, Chapter 199, pp. 281-342).
The town with the same name was established ("erected it into a town") in an act passed March 7, 1788, that divided counties into towns and in which a number of other towns were erected (1788 New York Laws, Chapter 64, pp. 748-767).
