U.S. city. Population 261,205 (1999) +18.5% 1990-1999. State capital. County seat of Wake County.

Earliest incorporation, as a city: Feb. 7, 1795
Earliest incorporation, as a city, was ratified February 7, 1795 (1794 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 59, pp. 24-26, date on p. 39).
An act ratified December 31, 1792 approved the plan for the city and the purchase of land for it that occurred on April 23, 1792 (1792 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 14, pp. 7-8, date on p. 32).
The first sale of lots was on June 4, 1792 (Wake, Capital County of North Carolina, Vol. 1, by Elizabeth Murray, 1983, pp. 84-85). Last of March 1792, commissioners met to locate the capital (ibid). There was no town at Raleigh when the General Assembly first met there December 30, 1794 (ibid).
An act that was ratified January 19, 1792 approved the site of the future Capital (1791 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 5, pp. 5-6, date on p. 32).
