Biography
U.S. city. Population 149,887 (1999) -6.5% 1990-1999. State capital. County seat of Providence County.
First charter of civil incorporation: March 17, 1644 N.S.
The first "charter of civil incorporation" was granted by the Governor of the colony of Providence on March 7, 1643 O.S. (March 17, 1644 N.S.) giving "full power and authority unto the said inhabitants to govern themselves..." (The Early Records of the Town of Providence, Vol. II, printed under authority of the City Council of Providence, 1893, Providence: Snow and Farnham City Printers, p. 151).
As a result of a petition from the inhabitants to incorporate themselves, the General Assembly approved, on March 14, 1648 O.S. (March 24, 1649 N.S.) a "free and absolute charter of civil incorporation and government to be known by the Incorporation of Providence Plantation in the Narragansett Bay..." (ibid, pp. 152-153).
Incorporated as a city during the session that began in October 1831 (1831 Rhode Island Acts and Resolves at pp. 21-31).
