First election: May 3, 1881
Earliest incorporation as a city from a townsite was approved February 25, 1881 and the first election of city officers was held on May 3, 1881 (1881 Territory of Arizona Acts, No. 59, pp. 105-114).
It was designated county seat in an act that created Maricopa county and that was approved February 14, 1871 (1871 Territory of Arizona Acts at pp. 53-55).
