Biography
U.S. city. Population 111,127 (1999) -2.4% 1990-1999. County seat of Peoria County.
Incorporation as a town: Feb. 21, 1837
Incorporation as a city: Dec. 3, 1844
Incorporation as a town was approved February 21, 1837 (1836 Illinois Incorporation Laws at pp. 64-69).
The act incorporating it as a city states that it was in force (approved) December 3, 1844 (1845 Illinois Private Laws at pp. 224-234). At the end of this act is the following statement: "This bill having been laid before the Council of Revision, and ten days not having intervened before the adjournment of the General Assembly, and said bill not having been returned with the objections of council on the first day of the present session of the General Assembly, the same has become a law" followed by the Secretary of State's name (ibid). This charter was subject to approval by a majority of votes cast in a special election held on April 21, 1845 (ibid).
The township with the same name is coextensive with the city.
