Incorporation as a city was passed February 13, 1845 (1844 Virginia Acts, Chapter 138, pp. 118-122).
Earliest incorporation as a borough September 26, 1736 N.S. (September 15, 1736 O.S.) by a royal charter issued by King George II as cited in an act passed during the 1752 session (1752 Virginia Colonial Acts, Chapter 8, p. 287).
