U.S. city. Population 179,138 (1999) +4.5% 1990-1999. Independent city.
Incorporation as a city: Jan. 16, 1896
Consolidation with the City of Warwick was effective: July 1, 1958
Incorporation as a city was passed January 16, 1896 (1896 Virginia Acts, Chapter 64, pp. 74-96). It was never incorporated as a town (The Hornbook of Virginia History, fourth edition edited by Emily Salmon and Edward Campbell, 1994, Richmond, Virginia: The Library of Virginia, p. 192).
Consolidation with the City of Warwick was validated and confirmed March 3, 1958, effective July 1, 1958 (1958 Virginia Acts, Chapter 141, pp. 147-190).
The County of Warwick was incorporated as Warwick, a city of the first class, in an act that was passed April 8, 1952, effective July 16, 1952 (1952 Virginia Acts, Chapter 706, pp. 1151-1167) and was approved by the voters on June 10, 1952 (A Body Incorporate by Chester Bain, 1967, Charlottesville, Virginia: University Press of Virginia, p. 118).
