Incorporation as a city was effective: Apr. 11, 1836
Incorporation as a city, replacing the township with the same name, was approved February 29, 1836, effective April 11, 1836 and subject to acceptance by three-fifths of the electorate in an election held on March 18, 1836 (1836 New Jersey Laws at pp. 185-205).
