Earliest incorporation as a town: Dec. 3, 1819
First election: Jan. 3, 1820
Incorporation as a city: Dec. 23, 1837
Earliest incorporation as a town was approved by the Governor December 3, 1819 and the first election of town councillors was held on January 3, 1820 (1819 Territory of Alabama Acts at pp. 110-113).
Incorporation as a city was approved December 23, 1837 (1837 Alabama Acts at pp. 54-58).
