U.S. city. Population 572,424 (1999) -8.9% 1990-1999. Milwaukee/Washington/Waukesha Counties, county seat of Milwaukee County.
Earliest incorporation as a village: Jan. 16, 1838
Incorporation as a city: Jan. 31, 1846
Earliest incorporation as a village was approved January 16, 1838, subject to acceptance by at least 75 voters in an election (1838 Territory of Wisconsin Laws, No. 55, pp. 258-263).
Incorporation as a city was approved January 31, 1846 (1845 Territory of Wisconsin Laws at pp. 164-188).
The town with the same name was established ("set off into a separate town") by an act that was approved January 2, 1838, in force March 3, 1838 (1837 Territory of Wisconsin Local Acts, No. 18, p. 166).
