U.S. city. Population 606,109 (1999) -2.1% 1990-1999. County seat of Shelby County.
Earliest incorporation as a town: Dec. 9, 1826
First election: March 3, 1827
Incorporation as a city: Jan. 31, 1840
Earliest incorporation as a town was passed December 9, 1826 and the first election was held on March 3, 1827 (1826 Tennessee Acts, Chapter 145, pp. 126-128).
Incorporation as a city was passed January 31, 1840, subject to acceptance by voters at a special election (1839 Tennessee Private Acts, Chapter 155, p. 248).
Memphis and South Memphis were consolidated in an act passed December 3, 1849 (1849 Tennessee Acts, Chapter 7, pp. 7-15).
