Earliest incorporation as a village was approved February 3, 1846 (1846 Territory of Wisconsin Laws at pp. 140-153).
Incorporation as a city was approved March 4, 1856 (1856 Wisconsin Private and Local Laws, Chapter 75, pp. 80-114).
The seat of government was located and established there in an act approved December 3, 1836 (1836 Territory of Wisconsin Local Laws, No. 11, pp. 49-50).
All remaining townships in Dane County were organized into the town of Madison in an act approved February 2, 1846 (1846 Territory of Wisconsin Laws at pp. 28-30).
It was named county seat in an act approved December 7, 1836 (1836 Territory of Wisconsin Local Laws, No. 28, pp. 92-94).
