Incorporation as a city: April 1, 1836
Earliest incorporation as a town from the town of Chelmsford was approved by the Governor March 1, 1826 (1826 Massachusetts Laws, Chapter 112, pp. 181-184).
Incorporation as a city was approved by the Governor April 1, 1836, subject to acceptance by a majority of votes cast at a special town meeting (1836 Massachusetts Acts and Laws, Chapter 129, pp. 789-808).
