Biography
U.S. city. Population 253,128 (1999) -6.2% 1990-1999. County seat of Jefferson County.
Self regulation act that authorized elections: Dec. 19, 1795
Incorporation as a city: Feb. 13, 1828
Self-regulation and elections were authorized in an act approved December 19, 1795, effective upon passage (1795 Kentucky Acts, Chapter 7, pp. 45-47). In the above act, seven elected trustees were granted the power to erect a market, regulate and repair streets, impose taxes, and make rules, ordinances and regulations respecting boundaries of lots (ibid).
Incorporation as a city was approved February 13, 1828 (1827 Kentucky Acts, Chapter 172, pp. 208-225).
Established and trustees were appointed to lay off the town in an act passed by Virginia during the May 1780 session (1780 Virginia Acts at pp. 36-37, acts are not dated).
