U.S. city. Population 176,136 (1999) -0.5% 1990-1999. State capital. County seat of Pulaski County.
Designated state capital: Oct. 18, 1820
Self-regulation act that authorized elections: Oct. 27, 1825
First election: Jan. 2, 1826
Incorporation as a town: Nov. 7, 1831
Incorporation as a city: Nov. 2, 1835
Under an act approved October 27, 1825, the first election was held on January 2, 1826 and this act states "That the said trustees shall have power and authority, for the greater security of morals and good order within the limits of the corporation, to make such by-laws, as they may deem proper..." granting the town self-government but implying that the town was previously incorporated (1825 Territory of Arkansas Acts at pp. 28-35).
Incorporation as a town was approved by the Governor November 7, 1831 (1831 Territory of Arkansas Acts at pp. 76-78).
Incorporation as a city was approved November 2, 1835 (1835 Territory of Arkansas Acts at pp. 55-62).
An act changing the seat of government from the Post of Arkansas to Little Rock was approved October 18, 1820, effective June 1, 1821 (1820 Territory of Arkansas Acts at pp. 104-106).
