U.S. city. Population 215,928 (1999) +12.0% 1990-1999. State capital. County seat of Lancaster County.

Chosen state capital: July 29, 1867

Designated county seat: Feb. 12, 1869

Incorporation as a town: Apr. 7, 1869

"On petition of 189 citizens, the town of Lincoln was ordered incorporated by the County Commissioners, April 7, 1869.... The town election was held on May 3, 1869, and a Board of Trustees were chosen..." (History of the City of Lincoln Nebraska by Arthur B. Hayes and Sam D. Cox, 1889, Lincoln: State Journal Co., p. 164).

"On petition of a majority of the citizens of the village, the County Commissioners, on April 7, 1868, ordered ‘that the town of Lincoln be declared a body incorporate’" (ibid, p. 163). Although five trustees were elected on May 18, 1868, Hayes and Cox (1889) state that "...the town government failed to continue the organization during that year. The corporate existence of Lincoln, therefore, dates from 1869..." (ibid).

On June 14, 1867, a law was approved that provided "for the location of the Seat of Government of the State of Nebraska" and the appointed commissioners were to select and survey a site for a town suitable for a capital named Lincoln "on or before the fifteenth day of July, A.D. 1867", in force from and after passage (1867 Nebraska Laws at pp. 52-55). The commissioners met on July 29, 1867 and chose "the hamlet of Lancaster" with about 30 inhabitants as the seat of government, and it was renamed Lincoln by the commissioners in accordance with the above law (History of the City of Lincoln Nebraska by Arthur B. Hayes and Sam D. Cox, 1889, Lincoln: State Journal Co., pp. 148, 150).

Designated the county seat in a law approved February 12, 1869 (1869 Nebraska Laws at p. 244).
