U.S. city. Population 174,860 (1999) +1.0% 1990-1999. County seat of Knox County.
Established in self-regulation act: Sep. 30, 1794
First election: Feb. 2, 1799
Earliest incorporation as a town was effective: Jan. 1, 1816
It was established and commissioners were appointed to regulate the town in an act that was passed September 30, 1794 (1794 Territory of the United States of America South of the river Ohio Acts, Chapter 13, pp. 83-85).
Earliest incorporation as a town was passed October 27, 1815, effective January 1, 1816 (1815 Tennessee Acts, Chapter 202, pp. 270-272).
It was laid off in 1791 (ibid).
An act passed October 27, 1797 authorized the election of five commissioners (1797 Tennessee Acts, Chapter 21, pp. 134-136). However, the first town election did not occur until February 2, 1799 under authority of an act passed January 5, 1799 (1798 Tennessee Acts, Chapter 17, p. 170).
