Biography
U.S. city. Population 437,764 (1999) +0.6% 1990-1999. Jackson/Clay/Platte/Cass Counties.
Incorporation as a city: Feb. 22, 1853
Incorporation as the city of Kansas was approved February 22, 1853 (1852 Missouri Laws at pp. 244-246). The History of Jackson County (1966) states that "There was no municipal government in Kansas City prior to 1853" (The History of Jackson County, Missouri, Containing a History of the County, its Cities, Towns, etc. [author not named], 1966 [a reprint of the 1881 edition], Cape Girardeau, Missouri: Ramfre Press, p. 413).
The first sale of lots on July 7, 1838 was set aside by the circuit court so a second sale occurred on November 14, 1838 and the Kansas Town Company bought the entire plat and laid out the town which they called Kansas (ibid, p. 397).
