U.S. city. Population 738,907 (1999) +1.0% 1990-1999. State capital. Consolidated city and county seat of Marion County.
Established as state capital effective: Jan. 12, 1825
Earliest incorporation as a town: Feb. 5, 1836
Incorporation as a city: Jan. 26, 1847
Earliest incorporation as a town was approved February 5, 1836 (1835 Indiana Laws, Chapter 7, pp. 42-48).
Incorporation as a city was approved January 26, 1847, subject to acceptance by a majority of votes cast in a special election held March 27, 1847 (1846 Indiana Laws, Chapter 21, pp. 57-72).
An act establishing it as the seat of government was approved on January 20, 1824, effective January 12, 1825 (1824 revised Indiana Laws, p. 370).
An act appointing a commission to locate a seat of government for the state was approved January 11, 1820 (1819 Indiana Laws, Chapter 11, pp. 18-20).
