U.S. city. Population 177,893 (1999) +10.9% 1990-1999. County seat of Madison County.

Established as Twickenham: Dec. 22, 1809

Name changed from Twickenham: Nov. 25, 1811

Earliest incorporation as a town: Dec. 9, 1811

First election: Feb. 3, 1812

Incorporation as a city: Feb. 24, 1860

Earliest incorporation as a town was approved by the Secretary of the Mississippi Territory, in the absence of the Governor, on December 9, 1811 and the first election of town trustees was held on February 3, 1812 (1811 Mississippi Territory Acts at pp. 47-49).

Incorporation as a city was approved on February 24, 1860 (1859 Alabama Acts, No. 283, p. 412).

An act that established a town named Twickenham by appointing commissioners to select a site for the county seat, obtain the land for the townsite, lay off the town, and erect public buildings was approved by the Governor on December 22, 1809 (1809 Mississippi Territory Acts at pp. 94-96).

On November 25, 1811, an act was approved by the Secretary of the Mississippi Territory, in the absence of the Governor, "To change the name of the County Town [County Seat] of Madison County from Twickenham to Huntsville" (1811 Mississippi Territory Acts at p. 5).
