U.S. city. Population 199,562 (1999) +4.2% 1990-1999. County seat of Guilford County.

Named "Greensborough": Dec. 23, 1808
Self-regulation act: Dec. 15, 1810

Earliest incorporation as a town: Jan. 14, 1837
Incorporation as a city: March 28, 1870
"An act to regulate the Police of the Town of Greensborough..." that appointed a "police commission" to regulate the town was ratified December 15, 1810 (1810 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 59, pp. 29-31, date on p. 49). No elections of the police commissioners were authorized under this law (ibid). "An act to amend an act passed in 1810 to incorporate the Town of Greensborough in the county of Guilford" expanded the police commission, the town's governing body, to nine members was ratified December 28, 1816 (1816 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 63, p. 37, date on p. 54). Obviously, the General Assembly considered the 1810 law to be an incorporation act.
It was established and commissioners were appointed to fix the county seat and build a courthouse in an act that was ratified December 18, 1807 (1807 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 31, p. 18, date on p. 40).
Named "Greensborough" in an act that was ratified December 23, 1808 (1808 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 76, p. 30, date on p. 40).
"An act for the better regulation of the Town of Greensboro', in Guilford county" authorizing the election of commissioners of police, was ratified December 31, 1824, and the first election was held on February 10, 1825 (1824 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 113, p. 82, date on p. 98).
An act "to incorporate the town of Greensborough" was ratified January 14, 1837 (1836 North Carolina Private Laws, Chapter 56, pp. 313-315).
Incorporation as the city of "Greensboro'" was ratified March 28, 1870 (1869 North Carolina Private Laws, Chapter 122, pp. 201-223).
