Incorporation as a city: Apr. 2, 1850
Earliest incorporation as a village was approved April 5, 1838 (1838 Michigan Acts, No. 95, pp. 205-213).
Incorporation as a city was approved April 2, 1850, subject to acceptance by a majority of the votes cast in a special election held within 60 days of passage (1850 Michigan Laws, No. 247, pp. 261-267).
