Incorporation as a city was approved: Feb. 22, 1840
Incorporation as a city was approved February 22, 1840, effective on publication in the Fort Wayne Sentinel, and subject to acceptance by a majority of votes cast at a special election (1839 Indiana Laws, Chapter 6, pp. 16-32). The approval date serves as a proxy because the city library is unable to determine the date the law was published.
It was earlier incorporated as a town under a general incorporation law (1828 Indiana Laws, Chapter 36, p. 72).
