U.S. city. Population 106,970 (1999) -5.0% 1990-1999. County seat of Cumberland County.
Established as Campbelton: Dec. 11, 1762
Merger of Cross Creek and Campbelton: May 2, 1778
Earliest incorporation as a town and renamed Fayette-Ville: May 17, 1783
First election: Jan. 5, 1784
Earliest incorporation as a town and the name was changed "from Cambleton [sic] to Fayette-Ville" in an act ratified May 17, 1783 and the first election of town directors was held on January 5, 1784 (1783 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 24, pp. 33-35, date on p. 50).
An act "for the regulation of Campbelton" that united the village of Cross Creek and the town of Campbelton was ratified May 2, 1778 (1778 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 26, pp. 19-20, date on p. 20).
Established as Campbelton by an act that was approved and signed by the Governor December 11, 1762 (1762 North Carolina Colonial Laws, Chapter 14 as cited in The Colonial Records of North Carolina, collected and edited by William L. Saunders, Secretary of State, Vol. VI-1759 to 1765, 1888, Raleigh, NC: Josephus Daniels, pp. 891-892).
