Incorporation as a city: March 10, 1866
Earliest incorporation as a town and commissioners were appointed in an act that was ratified December 19, 1801 (1801 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 58, pp. 32-33, date on p. 54).
An act authorizing the election of commissioners was ratified December 24, 1819 and the first election was held on March 6, 1820 (1819 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 74, pp. 59-60, date on p. 83).
Incorporation as a city was ratified March 10, 1866 (1866 North Carolina Private Laws, Chapter 7, pp. 53-72).
It was established in an act that was ratified December 5, 1768 (1768 North Carolina Colonial Laws, Chapter 11). The date the above act was ratified is from an amendment authorizing commissioners to lay off more lots that was ratified May 2, 1778 (1778 North Carolina Laws, Chapter 23, p. 18).
The population was 450 in 1815. Also called Charlottetown or Charlottesburg (Hornet's Nest, the Story of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County by LeGette Blythe and Charles Brockmann, 1961, Charlotte, NC: McNally, p. 34).
