U.S. city. Population 401,726 (1999) +2.0% 1990-1999. State capital. County seat of Fulton County.
Earliest incorporation as the town of Marthasville: Dec. 23, 1843
First election: Mar. 3, 1845
Incorporation as a city and renamed Atlanta: Dec. 29, 1847
Earliest incorporation as the town of Marthasville, in DeKalb County at that time, was assented to December 23, 1843 (1843 Georgia Acts at pp. 83-85). The commissioners appointed by the act served until the first election was held on March 3, 1845 (ibid).
Incorporation as the city of Atlanta, in DeKalb County at that time, and the name was changed from Marthasville in an act that was approved by the Governor December 29, 1847 (1847 Georgia Acts at pp. 50-58).
A race riot began 9:30 pm on September 22, 1906 in which 12 were killed and 70 were wounded (Official History of Fulton County by Walter G. Cooper, History Commission, 1934, p. 825).
