Biography

Italian noted musician, composer of opera and church music. He studied under his father in Florence, later moving to Bologna and Milan to study under Sarti. After traveling to England, he wrote 13 operas before permanently established himself in Paris in 1788. Cherubini developed a mature style that made him a pioneer of French opera-comique and Grand Opera, and a father figure of the Romantic opera. A total of 24 operas were written before he devoted himself to sacred music from 1813. He was director of the Conservatory from 1821-1841. Cherubini died in Paris, 3/15/1842.
