Biography
Venezuelan politician and popular president of Venezuela, inaugurated on 2/02/1999, 10:45 AM, Caracas. A military overthrow began on 4/11/2002, when oil strikers began to riot in Caracas. The police fired into the crowd and killed 14 demonstrators and the military promptly installed Pedro Carmona as president, a coup that has not been associated with aid from the U.S. government. (Inauguration on 4/12/2002, 5:51 PM, Caracas.) Two days later, 4/14/2002, 4:35 AM, Chavez was reinstalled as president.
The next night, several Venezuelan generals were killed in a helicopter accident. By mid-June, huge rallies for and against the leftist president jammed Caracas and other Venezuelan cities. Citizens were quoted that "that crazy man has dragged us into political anarchy and economic disaster," emphasizing the bitter divisions in a nation that has the largest oil reserves outside the Middle East but where 80% of the people live below the poverty line.

Source Notes
Georgiana quotes Vania Norberto of Brazil for a time of 17:10 from Chavez himself to a Venezuelan astrologer. Monica Dimino, who practiced astrology in Venezuela for many years and retains a huge clientele there wrote: "Hugo Chavez, born July 28, 1954, at 3:30 AM in Sabaneta, Venezuela (8N46, 69W56). The date is well known and established. The hour was given to me by a Chavez acquaintance back in the early 90's when he was arrested for a failed coup. At the time, I was told that Chavez had revealed his birth hour to her because he wanted her to consult an astrologer for him. I did not accept that request because I was dealing with family health issues at the time." In December 2007 Sy Scholfield quotes a time of 4 AM from Orlando Albornoz's book, "Academic Populism: Higher Education Policies Under State Control" (Caracas: Universidad Central de Venezuela, 2005), p. 719: "In one unforgettable opportunity on state TV, the President's mother had to explain the time and the circumstances surrounding his birth. By the way, he was born at 4 am, in the middle of unusual rains and winds."
