Biography
American World Heavyweight Champion who had the unfortunate distinction of holding the title between the more popular fighters Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano.
Charles fought 122 times as a pro, winning 96 of the bouts. He did not have the magnetism or killer instinct that draws crowds. The fight that brought him the title was even considered dull. He out-pointed Jersey Joe Walcott in June 1949, winning the National Boxing Association's crown. He held the title two years, losing a rematch with Walcott when the he was KO'd in the seventh round.
Charles retired from the ring to work as a salesman and then for African American youths in Chicago out of a small office sponsored by Mayor Daley's Commission on Youth Welfare.
He died of multiple sclerosis at age 53 in Chicago, IL on May 27, 1975.
