Biography

Italian athlete, an Olympic Gold Medal champion cyclist who won the road race at Barcelona in 1992.

Casartelli died 7/18/1995 in a fatal cycling accident age 24, during a race. When two other racers went down in front of him, he crashed into a concrete barrier, head-first. The fatal accident happened in the French Pyrennees in an area known as "Col du Portet D'Aspet." Casartelli was just a month shy of his 25th birthday.
