Biography
Scottish-American industrialist who consolidated his steel industries in 1899. Two years later, he merged two corporations together to form the greatest corporation the world had ever known, U.S. Steel Co. As a philanthropist, his gifts to civic organizations were estimated at $350 million over his lifetime.
Carnegie emigrated to the U.S. at 13 where he worked as a bobbin boy, telegrapher, investor, and finally, a steel magnate. He married once and had one daughter.
In the fall of 1916 the Carnegies bought a mansion, Shadowbrook, near Lennox, MA, and his failing health improved there, until he died on 8/11/1919.

As was customary, people brought gifts, "the mother was congratulated in the evening hours . . . the cottage lights continued to burn until late that night." This may be artistic license, but if it came from local legend, we may consider sunset which was 3:40 PM at that location.
