Biography
Swedish royalty, the son of Oscar I and King of Norway and Sweden from 1859. He was born as Karl Ludvik Eugen, Prince of Sweden, Duke of Skane. While still a youth, he was influenced by the dream of uniting Sweden and Norway under one banner, that of Scandinavia, under one king, a king of the house of Bernadotte. Without having obtained permission from the parliament, he promised Frederik VII military support against Germany in 1863. When the war started, the Swedish government refused to support this and his rash independence cost Karl his credibility and influence in foreign affairs. Gradually, his power was assumed by parliament.
Karl married Lovisa of the Netherlands; their children were Princess Louisa and Prince Karl Oscar. When Carl died on 8/19/1872, he was succeeded by his brother, Oscar II.
