Biography
American politician and lawyer, a member of the US House of Representatives from Illinois for several terms and Speaker of the House from 1903-11. In 1908 he made a bid to be the Republican Party candidate for US President. The Cannon House Office Building in Washington, DC is named after him.
His father, a country doctor, drowned when young Joseph was 10. Since he was the older of two boys, young Joseph then had to take care of the family farm in Indiana. Admitted to the bar in 1858, he moved to Illinois in 1859 where he became an attorney for the state of Illinois. He was married in 1862 to Mary P. Reed. He died on November 12, 1926, four years after retiring from politics, in Danville, IL, age 90.
