Source Notes

Marcello Borges quotes Raul Varela, "The Astrological Memories of Camões" of Mário Saa, published in 1940 in Lisbon.

Filipe Ferreira writes on 18 April 2015: "The date, time and place of birth of Luís de Camões presented by Mário Saa are totally speculative. Luís de Camões birth data are totally unknown. There is no birth record of him nor surviving horoscope. The chart you have is not correct. Instead of 23 January 1524 Gregorian it should be 23 January 1524 Julian/OS or 5 February 1524 Gregorian/NS. The time 21:30 LMT is correct for an an ascendant of 3º 29’ Libra, according to Mário Saa. And surely this is not B but XX.

Even Camões date of death is not certain. According to Faria e Sousa the poet died in 1579. Also Mário Saa says that in 1594 a friend of Camões, D. Gonçalo Coutinho, had a tombstone engraved saying he had died in 1579. The church was destroyed during the 1755 earthquake and the tombstone lost. Later a document surfaced (concerning a small allowance the poet received from the State and that had been transferred to his destitute surviving mother Ana de Sá), issued on 18 November 1582 NS, stating the poet had died on 10 June 1580. Surely this is an OS date. This corresponds to 20 June 1580 NS. "
