Biography

American politician and kidney donor. On March 4, 2003, the Massachusetts State Treasurer underwent surgery that began at about 8 AM to donate a kidney to his sister Alicia Cahill, who has long suffered from diabetes. She is the oldest of the nine Cahill children, and he is the next-born. A graduate of Boston University, he and two friends started their own small restaurant in 1982. He gained a seat on the Quincy (MA) city council in 1987 and held it for 15 years. In 1996, he made a successful run for the Norfolk County Treasurer’s office, and in 2002, he was elected State Treasurer and Receiver General, with his oath of office taken on January 15, 2003. He and his wife have four daughters.

Although he was a member of the Democratic Party, Cahill declared himself an Independent and staked his claim to be Governor of Massachusetts in the 2010 election.
