Biography
American Ecclesiastic, named Archbishop of St. Louis, MO on December 2, 2003, replacing Justin Rigali. Burke's installation date in his new position was January 26, 2004.
Burke was ordained a priest in mid-1975 and was appointed Bishop of La Crosse on Dec. 10, 1994, where he served until his appointment as Archbishop of St. Louis.. He caused an uproar in January 2004 when his ruling became public that Catholic politicians who support pro-life legislation could not receive Communion.
On June 27, 2008, Burke was appointed Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura by Pope Benedict XVI and moved to Rome to take up the responsibilities of the position.
