Biography

Australian homicide. A one-time vegetable salesman, "a bit slow." On 4/28/1996, 1:30 PM, in the cafeteria after having eaten his lunch, Port Arthur, Tasmania, he opened fire on visitors to the tourist spot with automatic rifles taken from his tennis bag. He took three hostages and held them in a nearby guest house overnight. In the morning, between 8:30 and 8:40 AM, he ran out, clothes ablaze from a fire set in the house. He was captured; the hostages were later found dead. The death toll reached a total of 35 people with 22 injured. Out of the carnage, Australian gun laws changed at extraordinary short notice with the ban of automatic weapons.

Bryant was sentenced to a maximum prison term with no hope of parole in Tasmania. He is described as simple-minded, perhaps with schizophrenia and certainly mentally dysfunctional. He has had life-threatening psychotic episodes and tried to commit suicide twice. Simple and seeking attention, he tries to make friends in the prison but has the emotional level of a two-year-old. His IQ is estimated at the age of 11, low to normal. He shows no remorse for the killings, perhaps because he is unable to understand the severity of his actions.

He had suffered a serious accident in 1992, about which his mother wrote in her autobiography (see source notes): "On 20 October 1992 Helen and Martin travelled to the Sorell supermarket in a very small car with three dogs [...] Upon their return journey to the farm, Helen and Martin were involved in a serious accident with another car about one kilometre from the farm (at Copping). Helen and two of the dogs were killed instantly. One dog escaped and arrived home two days later. Helen was only 59 when she tragically died. Martin was seriously injured in the accident.

His neck was close to being broken. Maurice needed to be in the Royal Hobart Hospital with him, and unfortunately, the dream holiday we had planned was cancelled due to the circumstances. [...] Martin spent several days in hospital after his accident and, thank the Lord, the surgeon was pleased with his progress. Maurcie paid lindy a wage to care for Martin as his head was connected to a large metal halo to prevent any head and neck movement. He was almost incapacitated and unable to do anything other than walk around slowly for three months. He then spent a further two months in a high leather neck brace. [...] After Helen's death, Martin was left Helen's large estate in its entirety. After his recovery, he lived at the large Clare Street home alone."

Source Notes

Anne Elliott quotes Linda Reid with 2:45 am from a family member.

A forum member writes on 19-dec-2012: Carleen Bryant, mother of Martin, in her 2010 autobiography "My Story" (publishers Ludeke Publishing, Tasmania) gives the following information in Chapter 7, on page 42: "Our first child, Martin, was born at the Queen Alexandra Hospital on 7 May 1967 at around midnight. He was born within two hours of me going into an induced labour. "

In consequence, the Rodden rating has been downgraded from A to C.
