Austrian composer and organist best known for his nine splendidly constructed and lengthy symphonies. Bruckner's personal life was uneventful and his personality unassuming. The son of a poor schoolteacher, he became chorister at the monastery of St. Florian where he learned music. From 1840 he worked as a schoolmaster and then organist of Linz cathedral in 1856. Moving to Vienna in 1868, he taught at the conservatory and the university. Bruckner's work did not achieve worldwide recognition until well into the twentieth century.
