Biography
American film director who entered film in 1915 as directing assistant to the great European master Maurice Tourneur. Formerly he had trained as an engineer and worked in the auto industry. After five years as a disciple and film editor, he began to direct his own films in 1920, establishing his reputation with "The Eagle," which starred Valentino in 1925.
Brown produced all of his own films after 1947. Through MGM, he directed many quality productions in the early '50s, unabashedly sentimental and a romantic.
Brown died of kidney failure in 1987.
