Biography
American diplomat, Bremer was named special envoy to Iraq by George W. Bush on May 6, 2003. With his conservative political affiliation and his expertise in counter-terrorism, Bremer was seen as perfect for the job. He continued in that post until a provisional government could be established. The provisional Iraqi government took over at 10:26 AM local time in Baghdad, on June 28, 2004.
A graduate of Yale University, he speaks three languages: Dutch, French and Norwegian. After college graduation, he spent a year in Paris studying political science and then earned his a graduate degree in business from Harvard in 1966. He spent the next 23 years with the State Department, and held posts in Norway and The Netherlands. In 1989, he was made ambassador-at-large for U.S. counter-terrorism efforts. In 1989, he retired from the government and joined his former boss Henry Kissinger in Kissinger's consulting firm. His expertise in terrorism was well-regarded and in June of 2002, President Bush named him to the Homeland Security Advisory Council.
Called "Jerry" by his friends reportedly because his birthday falls on St. Jerome's Day, he has been married since 1966 and has two children, son Paul and daughter Lila A fitness buff, he is a former triathlete and at age 63 continues to work out every day.
