Biography

French artist, a marine painter and follower of Corot and master of Monet. He was called "the master of the sea" by Corot for his evocative works. The son of a sailor, he ran a stationery and picture-framing business at Le Havre, 1844-'49. Living mostly in Normandy, portraying the resorts in the English Channel in various media such as oil, drawings and watercolors, he concentrating on mainly beach scenes and seascapes. Boudin was one of the first artists to paint outdoors rather than a studio, lending to his luminous skies. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1896 and there is a Boudin Museum in Honfleur, his native town.
