Biography
Spanish royalty born in Rome, the Duke of Cadiz, he was known as Alfonso de Borbon y de Dampierre.
A cousin to King Carlos, he served as Spain's Ambassador to Sweden from 1969 to 1973.
He married Maria del Carmen Martinez-Bordiu y Franco in 1972 and they divorced ten years later in 1982. The Duke was granted custody of their two sons. But in February 1984 he was found to be negligent in a traffic accident that killed his older son and the Duke lost custody of his younger son for a six month period.
The Duke was an avid skier. It is said that he drove and skied with great speed. He served as president of the Spanish Skiing Federation from 1977 to 1984 and president of the Spanish Olympic Committee from 1984 to 1987. He died in a skiing accident on the slopes in Vail, CO on January 30, 1989.
