Biography
French cyclist and three-time winner of the prestigious Tour de France. He is one of the few champions to win the Tour three years in a row ( from 1953 - 1955). In 1954 he was world champion. In 1950 he won the Tour's King of the Mountains competition and continued to race through 1959, winning many awards and contests.
An emotional man, he was reportedly prone, especially in his earlier years, to burst into tears if his performance was not up to par or to sulk at the slightest insult. He loved the matinee idol status conferred on him for his cycling achievements.
He was involved in a car accident in 1962 and his cycling career was effectively over. He turned his name and his talent for business to good use and launched a thassotherapy business, sporting goods line under his name. He died on March 13, 1983 in Biarritz, just one day after his 58th birthday.
