Biography
Italian ecclesiastic, Roman Catholic Cardinal, Archbishop of Genoa who condemned Dan Brown's novel, "The DaVinci Code," declaring that Catholics should not read it. He was appointed Secretary of State at the Vatican under Pope Benedict.
Born the fifth of eight children, Bertone was ordained a priest in the Salesian order on July 1, 1960. Earning a doctorate in canon law, he became an authority in the field and a noted teacher of the subject. On June 1, 1989, he became the Rector of the Pontifical Salesian University.
On June 4, 1991, he was appointed Archbishop of Vercelli by Pope John Paul II and was installed in the office two months later on August 1.
On June 13, 1995, Pope John Paul II appointed him Secretary of the Congregation under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Bertone was entrusted with publishing the third secret of Fatima. On December 10, 2002 he became Archbishop of Genoa. On October 21, 2003, Pope John Paul II elevated him to the rank of Cardinal.
