Biography

American politician, a Massachusetts State Senator in spite of the handicap of Cerebral Palsy. Neither a stilted gait nor hesitant speech have slowed him down.

He grew up in a highly supportive family on the North Shore and graduated from a parochial high school after two years in a school for handicapped kids. After graduating from Boston College, he served in Vista, the domestic Peace Corps, for 15 months in the barrios of Texas. He earned his Masters in education and became director of vocational schools and training centers for the mentally impaired.

In 1979, to become a better advocate for the handicapped, he ran for city councilor-at-large in his local government, and won the position. After serving there for four years, he ran for the MA Senate, again winning the post. By 1997, he was the longest serving member after 15 years, both Assistant Majority Leader and Chairman of the Steering and Policy Committees.
