Spanish bullfighter, known by his nickname of El Cordobes. He captured the imagination of the Spanish people and became a legend for courage; none fight so close to the horns as he. He was the highest paid bullfighter in history, as he received $1.8 million for 121 fights in 1970.
Penfield Collection quotes the biography "Or I'll Dress You In Mourning," "which states according to his sister that he was born in the middle of the afternoon." That biography, by L. Collins and D. Lapierre (1968), states on p. 13, "On this 20th day of May 1964, he had just turned 28 years old." On p.27 it describes the children playing in the yard: "...a warm afternoon...heard the baby's cry."
"Current Biography," 1966, states, "5/04/1936 is on his identify card; however, the date is disputed: suggested dates are 12/16/1935, and 12/10/1937. Church records state that he was baptized on 4/19/1938." PC adds that a French source gives 7:00 AM (same date).
