Austria-Hungary-born American writer and illustrator of children's books and an internationally known gourmet. He is known best for the Madeline picture books. Six were published from 1939 to 1961; a seventh was discovered after his death and published posthumously in 1999. He died on October 1, 1962 in new York City.
Sy Scholfield quotes him in "My Life in Art" by Ludwig Bemelmans (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1958), p. 39: "did I have my birth certificate with me? I said: 'No, I'm not even sure when I was born. It says in my passport April 27, 1898, but my mother said it was at 3 A.M., the last day of April.'"
