Dutch biologist, zoologist, explorer and museum director.
He was member of The North New Guinea Expedition, a Dutch expedition to the unknown north coast of New Guinea for the purposes of scientific exploration and to seek exploitable coal resources (1903). He discovered and described many new species in books.
In the 1920s he was director of the Zoological Museum of Artis in Amsterdam.
Later he became professor in zoogeography at the University of Amsterdam.
He died 11 May 1968 in Amersfoort.
