Biography
French politician who ran unsuccessfully for President of France in 2002 and 2007.
The son of farmers, he attended university. He began his career as a history teacher and writer, and produced several books on politics and history. In the early 1980s he entered politics and held several positions, serving as education minister in the mid 1990s. A self-described "Clintonian," he came in third in the 2007 run-off election, behind front-runners Segolene Royal and Nicholas Sarkozy. He subsequently formed a new party The Democratic Movement.
Bayrou and his wife have five children and he continues to work on his family farm.
